Description
Dutasteride (brand name Avodart) is manufactured and marketed by GlaxoSmithKline. It is an active agent in an oral medicine, that has proved to be very effective in treating genetic male pattern hair loss on the top of the head and the mid-scalp area.
The medicine has been approved for prescription by the US Food & Drug Administration and in Europe for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). In addition, it is prescribed for the treatment of male pattern baldness (MPB) off label. It is also known by its European brand name, Avolve.
Application
Dutasteride reduce the overall risk of being diagnosed with prostate cancer; however, there is insufficient data to determine if they have an effect on the risk of death and may increase the chance of more serious cases.
Dutasteride is used alone or in combination with tamsulosin (Flomax) to treat men who have symptoms of an enlarged prostate gland, which is also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Benign enlargement of the prostate is a problem that can occur in men as they get older. The prostate gland is located below the bladder. As the prostate gland enlarges, certain muscles in the gland may become tight and get in the way of the tube that drains urine from the bladder. As the prostate gland enlarges, certain muscles in the gland may become tight and get in the way of the tube that drains urine from the bladder. This can cause problems with urinating, such as a need to urinate often, a weak stream when urinating, or a feeling of not being able to empty the bladder completely.
It is used in the treatment hyperplasia and androgenic alopecia. Because these drugs reduce levels of dihydrotestosterone (DHT). they are used to prevent and treat hairloss. It is most commonly used to treat enlarged prostate glands.
Dutasteride blocks the action of an enzyme called 5-alpha-reductase. This enzyme changes testosterone to another hormone that causes the prostate to grow. As a result, the size of the prostate is decreased. The effect of dutasteride lasts only as long as the medicine is taken. If it is stopped, the prostate begins to grow again.
Once a medicine has been approved for marketing for a certain use, experience may show that it is also useful for other medical problems. Although these uses are not included in product labeling, dutasteride is used in certain patients with the following medical conditions.
